To become the best, and remain the best, organizations need a management system that helps them deliver the best products and services for the marketplace, while taking into account the needs of the environment in which they are working. Some of the foundations for a successful strategy is ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management.

In the November/December 2015 issue of ISOfocus, we bring together the latest commentary on the new ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015. We ask the top experts in the field for the latest information and advice on the newly revised management system standards (MSS). These standards have been implemented worldwide by millions of large and small organizations, in manufacturing and services, and in both the public and private sector.

In his opening comment, Scott Steedman, Director of Standards, British Standards Institution, highlights how industry benefits from the implementation of an MSS with increased performance, improved organizational reputation and, ultimately, more business. “With the 2015 revisions, the millions of organizations already benefitting from ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 will be able to integrate and streamline their management systems to ensure that no issue gets overlooked,” he says.

“The alignment of the new standards with leading practices completes an important transition for quality and environmental management systems from the early days, where quality management was frequently perceived as a ‘bolt on’ for manufacturing companies, to a contemporary business management tool that can be fully embedded at the highest level in any organization worldwide.”

With ISO 9001, organizations can demonstrate that they have the appropriate systems in place to deliver a consistent, high level of service, whilst ISO 14001 shows organizations are managing and reducing their environmental burden on an ongoing basis.

So what do these MSSs mean to users around the world? How do you implement them? And which changes/improvements are poised to make the biggest impact?

We spoke to some of today's most important industry leaders and asked them to share the changes/improvements they're most excited about. Here, Welspun and IBM explain why ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are good for the business, and highlight some of the key considerations when implementing them within their companies.

So if you’re thinking about using the new ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards, look no further than the latest ISOfocus. We hope this issue gives you inspiration, insight, and some new

practical ideas of your own.
